Hine Cognac is a prestigious and historically significant name in the world of fine spirits, with a legacy that stretches back over two centuries. Founded in 1763 by a British merchant, Thomas Hine, the Hine Cognac House is one of the oldest and most respected producers of Cognac in France. The company’s headquarters is located in the heart of the Cognac region, specifically in the town of Jarnac, in the Charente department, an area renowned for its ideal conditions for producing some of the finest eaux-de-vie in the world.
From its inception, Hine has been committed to crafting high-quality cognacs, blending traditional methods with a forward-thinking approach. As a family-run business, the Hine family has passed down the expertise and passion for producing exceptional spirits over generations. The house’s distinctiveness lies in its dedication to creating elegant, refined cognacs that showcase the unique terroir of the region, with particular emphasis on the Grand Champagne and Petite Champagne crus – both of which are considered the finest crus for producing exceptional eaux-de-vie.
The process of creating Hine Cognac is a meticulous one, involving the careful selection of grapes and a focus on producing wines with lower alcohol content, which are then distilled using traditional copper pot stills. After distillation, the spirit is aged for many years in French oak barrels, allowing it to develop a complexity and depth of flavor that is characteristic of the finest cognacs. Hine is especially known for its ability to blend young and old eaux-de-vie to create harmonious, well-balanced expressions that cater to the most discerning palates.
Hine Cognac has several celebrated expressions in its portfolio, including the VS (Very Special), VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale), and XO (Extra Old), as well as more limited and rare offerings like the Hine Triomphe and the Hine Antique. These releases are known for their smooth, rich profiles, with notes ranging from delicate fruitiness and floral aromas to deep spice and oak undertones, depending on their age and blend. The house is also recognized for its ability to craft unique single-cru cognacs that highlight the distinct qualities of a specific vineyard or region within the Cognac appellation.
Hine Cognac remains an active and well-respected name in the industry, continuing to be a symbol of craftsmanship and elegance. The house is now part of the LVMH Group, one of the world’s leading luxury conglomerates, but it still retains its heritage and commitment to producing high-quality, artisanal cognacs. With a reputation that spans the globe, Hine Cognac continues to captivate connoisseurs and collectors with its refined and elegant offerings, ensuring its place in the storied history of Cognac production for generations to come.
