While the Big Four brands treat VSOP like a cocktail base dressed up in a gold carton, Frapin shows up with single-estate Grande Champagne fruit aged around eight to ten years. It completely skips the heavy caramel syrup and aggressive boozy bite typical of the category. Instead, you get a bright, sophisticated, slightly dry cognac that acts way more mature than its label admits, practically begging you to leave the cocktail shaker in the cupboard.

Aroma

Give it a gentle swirl and it opens with crisp red apples, ripe apricots, and sweet orange marmalade backed by a big bouquet of dried spring flowers. Behind all that fresh orchard fruit, you pick up a gentle waft of vanilla bean, toasted pastry crust, and a touch of white pepper that keeps the aroma crisp and lively instead of cloying.

Taste

The first sip lands soft and juicy, delivering candied orange peel, honeyed peach, and sweet white grapes. Before it turns too sweet, the classic chalky Grande Champagne structure takes over, bringing in dry toasted oak, baking spices, and a light citrus zing that leaves your tongue feeling remarkably clean.

Finish

The finish hangs around much longer than a standard grocery-store VSOP has any right to, fading out gracefully on warming cinnamon, cracked pepper, and faint cocoa nibs. It leaves a pleasant, dry wood-tannin grip that reminds you this came from patient French cellars rather than an industrial blending vat.

Frapin VSOP is right in my comfort zone for an everyday pour, especially if you like some structure but still want the fruit to come through.

Aroma

I get a nice pop of vanilla and a bit of floral lift at first, with just enough oak underneath to keep things interesting. There's a cinnamon warmth but it's not overpowering, if you give it a minute in the glass, that mellow grande champagne character starts to show.

Taste

On the palate, there's more vanilla and some cinnamon spice, which I really enjoy. The oak is definitely present but doesn't drown out the brighter notes. it lands somewhere between dry and gently sweet. Would've loved just a touch more fruit, but overall it's solidly balanced for the grade.

Finish

Finish is medium length for me, there's some lingering pepper and a bit of toasted oak, but nothing harsh or bitter. Not super complex at the tail end, though it does leave your mouth ready for another sip.
