Raison Personnelle Cognac is a boutique cognac producer located in the village of Angeac-Champagne, situated in the heart of the Grande Champagne cru – the most prestigious region within the Cognac appellation. This cognac house was founded in 1994 by Sabine and Bertrand de Witasse, who left behind urban professional careers to pursue their shared dream of crafting fine cognac rooted in tradition and authenticity.
The name "Raison Personnelle" translates to "Personal Reason," and it perfectly reflects the spirit of the estate – born out of a personal calling and deep passion for the land and its products. The family owns and cultivates a 20-hectare vineyard, primarily planted with the Ugni Blanc grape, known for its suitability in producing high-quality eaux-de-vie. The vineyard surrounds the church steeple of Angeac-Champagne, forming a picturesque and historically rich setting.
Raison Personnelle Cognac is known for its artisanal approach, embracing traditional production methods. Distillation is done using the Charentais copper still, and aging takes place in French oak barrels to enhance complexity and balance. Each cognac is crafted as a single estate product, meaning everything from vine to bottle is handled under the direct supervision of the de Witasse family.
Their collection is distinguished by unique numeric labels such as XO 3.1, XO 4.0, and XO 5.0. Each number represents a specific blend or vintage with varying characteristics in aroma and taste. These expressions are known for their elegant profiles – often floral, spicy, and smooth, with subtle hints of licorice and dried fruit, capturing the very essence of the Grande Champagne terroir.
Raison Personnelle remains fully operational and continues to produce limited quantities of high-quality cognac. With a clear focus on craftsmanship, heritage, and terroir expression, this small but passionate cognac house has carved a respected place in the world of fine cognac.
