Overall (85)
Forget the polite, delicate perfume of everyday commercial cognac. Daniel Bouju’s Royal Brut de Fût is an unapologetic cask-strength monster sitting at a hefty 60% ABV. Coming straight out of Grande Champagne and aged in heavily charred new Limousin oak barrels, this thing looks almost as dark as motor oil and drinks like pure cognac concentrate designed specifically for bourbon lovers and cigar fanatics.
Aroma
Approach this glass with genuine caution because sixty percent alcohol will gladly blast your eyebrows off if you shove your face right into it. Once you let it rest and air out, it drops a massive payload of dark chocolate fudge, sticky molasses and pipe tobacco. Behind the heavy dark fruit, you get crushed coffee beans and an intense wall of toasted cedar wood that smells like cracking open an antique humidor
Taste
The texture is ridiculously thick and syrupy, completely coating your tongue on the very first drop. It hits you initially with an avalanche of brown sugar, stewed figs, and dark cherry jam, before the oak muscle flexes hard. You get hit with black pepper, licorice, and a bracing wood bitterness that immediately dries out the sweet fruit and keeps the whole thing from turning into pancake syrup. A splash of room-temperature water is practically mandatory here to unlock all the hidden spice
Finish
The finish is practically endless and will stick around on your palate until tomorrow morning whether you want it to or not. It leaves earthy leather, dry wood tannins, and lingering spicy paprika heat deep down in your chest. This is heavy-artillery brandy that will brutally destroy your tastebuds for anything subtle afterwards, but as a nightcap alongside a dark espresso or a fat maduro cigar, it is absolute perfection
